Following the iron brush

The following 4 pages are handout that students in the metalwork section at the Tokyo University School of Art are given at the start of their studies there. Most of the shapes will already familiar to most of you. The curved punches at the bottom of the first page are used for uchidashi.
The first chisel on the left bottom of the second page is a specialised chisel for wire inlay. It's use needs some detailed explanation and a careful tutorial but I'll get to that. It is very unlikely that this particular chisel and technique was used in the decoration of tsuba and other fittings.
The 3 tagane on page 3 at the top are all used in inlay work. For flattening, setting the edges of the inlay and planishing etc. The last one on the right is the sort of blunt nosed chisel/punch we use to push up the lip around the edge of the recess that will receive the inlay (mon-gane)








This last page merely indicates the tools illustrated and the various sizes the instructors there advise as being most useful.
Sorry that it's all in Japanese, I've not got the energy right now to make new labels in English I'll get there eventually

Thanks very much! I have a couple of days scheduled at the forge on a couple of weeks, and I expect I will make a few blanks. I'm on a bit of a hooked knife-making binge right now, but will get on these designs soon after.

I was able to spend a day at the forge a couple of weeks ago, and forged 15 blanks out of O1 tool steel. These photos will really help in the profiling, once I manage to get around to finishing them off, between commissions.

Ford, if I were to want to grind up a couple of chisels for kata-kiri bori practice which would be the best to start with?

I'd suggest something about 100mm long and a cutting face no more than 4mm wide.

Doesn't this entice you to provide better labels?
