Study of early medieval silver pearl

Postby Doug Sanders » Fri Mar 25, 2016 12:39 pm

This study of the manufacture and composition of an early medieval piece of jewelry may be of interest to some. I found the method of manufacture and the use of malachite/gum tragacanth as solder to be fascinating. Is this a commonly known solder composition?

Thank you for the link Doug
Very interesting - techniques appear to have move on somewhat since I retired from Museum Conservation!

Thanks for the find, Doug. :sunny:
This method of soldering using colloidal copper was actually very common in antiquity and has fallen into oblivion for centuries-at least in central europe. Most descriptions of this technique can be found in connection with granulation work on fine gold.
