Composition

Postby Mel B » Tue Jan 10, 2017 2:40 am

I'm interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on this one...

I've been looking to get a better understanding of composition and I'm wondering if you find there is such a thing as a distinctly 'Japanese' composition. If you think so, what do you think that entails?

I'm also curious if anyone has found any quality books on such information. So far I have merely been doing many tracings to get a feel of certain compositions I've found of interest. But I suspect the master's before us have thought much on it, and so it is worth a deeper look.

Cheers,
Mel :smart:

Hi Mel,
this topic was discussed some years ago hidden in other threads.
Ford made a special post on Japanese art and aesthetics.

Here are some links to e-books that might be of use for you:

Arthur Dow: Composition; a series of exercises in art, a good introduction on Notan.

Henry Bowie: On the law of japanese painting

Josiah Conder: The flowers of Japan and the art of floral arrangement
